Beginner Hiking 101
Oct05
Want to go on a hike do you? Hiking, like most outdoor activities, can come with some risks or hazards.
Basically the first rule of thumb is to read up on what hiking is. Understand the differences in long hikes versus short hikes. Head to Youtube, check out some videos, and move to the next step. The next step is to find a hiking buddy, preferably someone who is a little more experienced than you. Then you can both set out to a nearby destination to try out your first hike. Some rules here would be to stick to the well marked trails and never venture out too far. Also give detailed plans of your excursion to someone you know not on the hike. Keep it short and simple to see how you do.
Remember if you can to take along and learn how to use a GPS tracking system, first aid kit, plenty of water, and a cell phone in case you get lost.
At the end of the hike see how you did by remembering how your shoes acted on the trails, were you too hot or cold, or did you have too little water. Beginner hiking is a lot like skiing, beginners in skiing never start out on the expert slopes, they work their way up from the bunny slope. Have fun out there!
